Sunday Coffee

Pin It now! while hubby was off watching football today, i did what any nyc domesticated housewife would do on a sunday...go to starbucks. i know, i know - i'm supposed to be thrifty and talked about "feeding the pig". i can't seem to kick this caffeine addiction though and my love for starbucks vanilla lattes. there is something satisfying about getting something that is $3.81 that is worth so much less, something that i can't make at home and tastes absolutely delicious. so after feeling guilty, i researched capaccino/latte machines online and how much i would save if i bought a machine and made the lattes at home. when hubby gets home, i tell him my ingenious plan of saving thousands of dollars by making lattes at home. he responds by saying that i should just stop drinking coffee period and it's all in my head that i "need" the latte. what! kick the one addiction in this country that won't put you in rehab. ridiculous!

but...hubby has a point. do i really need that satisfaction of carrying a starbucks cup around town? (yes.) should i quit the caffeine habit that i've tried so many other times to do before (yes.) is it really in my head that i "need" a latte? (yes, but there are a lot of other things in my head too.)

i'm definitely addicted - caffeine headaches, jonseing for that nice, hot cup of coffee in the morning (or else i'm cranky for the rest of the day). SO...starting oct. 1 i'm kicking the habit, or at least trying to. yes, i'm giving myself a few days to reflect and accept the fact that it's coming.

LuckyMag Boutique Crawl

Pin It now! yesterday the Girls and i went to Lucky Magzine's Boutique Crawl in the west village. discounts at certain stores, free drinks and special gifts. ok, so we didn't get any of those, but it was still fun to walk along bleecker and window shop.

we actually started off at lure fish bar for their happy hour. it wasn't too close to bleecker but we can never resist their awesome drinks and oysters.

then we headed to bleecker for some cynthia rowley (and her wardrobe truck), fresh with their delicious scents and soaps, alexis bittar jewelry, and ended the night with some peruvian at pardo's.

My Post-Wedding Chop

Pin It now! i really didn't want to be the newly-married wife that got the post-wedding chop and looked like the old married wife. so many newlyweds do the short hair after getting married, and i'm not exactly sure why.

i did it though. i cut it off! i loved my hair long, but it was getting so heavy that i felt like it was dragging my head down. and i always tied it up in a ponytail at work which i hated because i felt like i didn't have any style. plus, i didn't want to be known at work as the ponytail lady. i was also hesitant because my hubby has said on multiple occassions in the last few months that he loves my hair long. when i first met him he always told me he liked short hair, but since the i started growing my hair long for the wedding, he's been liking that much better. sorry hubby!

so i went to salon ziba and told my hairstylist jeffrey (a cantonese guy that i love!) i needed a change, but a stylish one. double brownie points for jeffrey!

before

after

btw, they give 15% off for corporate discounts. all i had to do is mention the company i work for and i got $7 off. with tax and tip, my cut was less than $50. nice for a nyc salon!

Any Given Sunday

Pin It now! here's my random events from today...

every weekend during the summer in nyc you can find a street fair. today there was one along 8th ave. i love how you can find arepas, kettlecorn and gyros all in the same block.

one of my favorite things to do on a sunday is to hang out in starbucks, catch up on my reading and people watch. today people watching was especially fun since i was in one of the starbucks along 8th avenue and got to see all the people there for the street fair.

like any other sunday in nyc or any other day for that matter, you're bound to find something random. here's a kid pulling some more kids along broadway.

Patrick Swayze

Pin It now!

i just heard that patrick swayze passed away after his long fight against pancreatic cancer. he's been sick for awhile, but knowing that he has died is still so sad and shocking. although he made numerous movies, the most iconic one for me and my friends was "dirty dancing". to say that this was just a movie doesn't give it justice. not to be too dramatic, but it was a part of our lives. i remember my parents wouldn't let us watch it when it first came out in 1987 since i was only 9 years old. but as we got older, the girls and i would watch it over and over again. we would imitate all the dance routines on one of the sidewalks of the side street down from my house. we made our parents take us to a dirty dancing show in atlantic city. we sat all the way in the back and could hardly see the stage even with binoculars, but it was the best show ever.

besides dirty dancing (which had a huge impact on me, but not the only defining event in his life), i love patrick swayze because he and his wife were together for 34 years. in hollywood years, that nearly an eternity, but a true testament to love.

we'll miss you...

Cool People

Pin It now! my friend YU, her hubby BC and their new baby boy came to visit NYC last thursday. Y was in the same small section with me in law school, which was the best section in all of Brooklyn Law when we started in 2002. haha, jk. our group of friends in section 9 was fabulous though because, not only were we the most studious group our first year, we all went to brazenhead at 4pm every thursday after our torts class.

Y moved to london last year, but was in town to visit. it was great to see them and to see her new baby! love ya! (i totally took this picture off her blog).

9/11 - 8 years later

Pin It now!

8 years ago today, all of us experienced in some way or another the tragic events of 9/11. i was a paralegal one year out of college. i was on the bus commuting from my parents' house in nj to the city with my mom sitting next to me. as we get close to the lincoln tunnel, i hear someone on their cell phone saying a small plane crashed into one of the buildings of the twin towers. they said it was a cesna so we all thought it was an accident. the second plane crashed while we were in the tunnel so we had no idea it was a terrorist attack. as my mom and i walk through port authority, still not knowing about the second plane, we see people crowding around the kiosks they used to have in the buildings that had cnn on. we were late that day so we rushed out still now knowing what happened. i took the city bus uptown and heard the bus driver say he saw the second plane hit. my heart sank and realized that it wasn't just a small cesna that crashed. my dear friend M worked in the towers and i went into a panic. i dialed her cell and of course couldn't get through since everyone else was calling and the phones were jammed.

i got to my office and everyone was freaking out. i called everyone i knew to make sure they were ok but the phones were jammed. i still couldn't get through to my friend M. my brother was still in rhode island at school and he was able to get through to people so we had him call to check on everyone. someone had a tiny tv and they left it on in the conference room, but they kept showing the planes crash into the buildings and i couldn't stand it so i go back to my desk to put the radio on. this was before the buildings fell and we were all in a panic but little did we know that it was going to get so much worse. i remember our office manager run to my desk saying she heard one of the towers fell. my friend H, who was the other paralegal working there with me, said her brother worked with the architect that built the towers and it was impossible for them to fall. it was also completely unbelievable that the towers could ever fall. then the unthinkable...the towers did fall. all i remember next was that my mom and i had to figure how to get back to nj. they had closed all the river crossings except for the gw bridge. my cousins were still in the city and they were going to try to drive north, head into nj and then go home to central jersey. it was a risk though because we weren't sure if anything was open for us to leave. my mom and i decided to camp out at my aunt's house in the upper west side. i think we walked up but i can't remember. i do remember the atmosphere was eerily quiet and sickeningly tense. i think people were still digesting what was happening. at my aunt's place, we kept watching tv even though they just kept showing the planes crash and the buildings fall. it was terrible but we couldn't help but watch. finally at 8pm that night, i got through to my friend M and found out she was ok. thank god.

my sister was still in high school and the school was closed early. she was safe at home with my dad, and we were glad they were away from the city. my brother was away which i think was hard for him since he couldn't be with us. we were all safe though. hubby M told me he was working at the american stock exchange downtown that morning and was caught up in the dust storm when the towers fell. he made it out ok, but the thought of him experiencing that is the scariest thing.

eight years later, i still cry seeing the memorial or when they ring the bells marking when the planes hit the towers. i still feel that same feeling of fear as if it were yesterday. it will probably never go away since it was something that was so catastrophic and tragic. like they say, we should never forget.

Fashion's Night Out

Pin It now!
i'm always a day late...i kept seeing signs and tv ads on fashion's night out, but only realized tonight that i missed it. about 700 stores participated in nyc, opened late, offered discounts and fun events. work has been insanely busy and kept me preoccupied so i missed it. maybe next year. i really have to stop saying that!

when else can you see anna and bloomberg in the same photo?

9-9-09

Pin It now! what 9 things did you do on 9/9/09?

i...
1. started my day at 5am
2. took a cab to work because it was still dark out, became sad that the summer is coming to an end and the cold cold nyc winter is just around the corner
3. had a yummy cup of cream of tomato soup from hale and hearty for lunch and then felt guilty for spending so much money on a 8oz cup of soup
4. worked my butt off at work and earned some money...as i tell hubby every morning "i'm going to make the donuts"
5. picked up some groceries
6. used the oven to cook leftover baby back ribs (hubby wasn't home or else he would have hated me using the oven while it was still summertime!)
7. watched obama give his health care speech to congress...and he was heckled!
8. watched the premiere of so you think you can dance...and i heckled them
9. realized that on this special day, it was just like any other day.

other people got married...even though it was a wednesday. who doesn't want to get married on a memorable date though? we got married on 8/8 (and on hubby's birthday) and everyone said it was easier for him to remember. 9/9/09 grooms better not forget their anniversary!
